This contract corresponds to the construction of a memorial in tribute to the victims of the 2017 Pedrogão Grande wildfires, between Km 7+500 and Km 7+700 of the EN236-1 road, based on the design by architect Eduardo Souto Moura. The memorial is being erected in the parish of Vila Facaia, municipality of Pedrogão Grande, district of Leiria.
The intervention includes the redesign of the intersection between this national road and Estrada Municipal 1168, to ensure conditions for visiting the memorial — particularly in terms of road safety on access and through-traffic. A half-roundabout has been built on EN236-1 at Km 7+500 to allow U-turn manoeuvres for light vehicles, in connection with Estrada de Pobrais. The contract also covers the requalification of the marginal landscape along EN236-1 next to the memorial.
In broad terms, the construction of the following elements is to be carried out:
- Framing lake of approximately 2,500 m², fed by a 60-metre gargoyle, edged by a planting strip of white water lilies, irises and ranunculus
- The memorial also includes, as a fundamental piece, a wall inscribed with the name of each of the 115 people who lost their lives in the forest fires of June and October 2017
- A parallel path along the former route of the EN
- Light-vehicle parking and a coach parking area
- Integration of this parallel path and respective parking into EN236-1
- Hydraulic circuits for the lake
- Public lighting and energy supply
To make the most of available resources, the following construction phasing has been planned:
1 — General earthworks for memorial implementation
2 — Excavation works for the redesign of the EN236-1 / Pobrais junction
3 — Construction of the hydraulic structure, bottom outlet and designed stormwater drainage network
4 — Completion of the junction redesign, including drainage and binder-course paving
5 — Works for the foundation of the structure
6 — Hydromechanical and electrical components of the contract
7 — Pavements within the memorial area, including cobble paving and stabilised decomposed granite (saibro)
8 — Milling and reinstatement of the wearing course
9 — Road markings on the upgraded section
10 — Lake waterproofing and filling
11 — Landscape design works in the area surrounding the memorial
