Outdoor Landscaping of the Castle Surrounding Area and Main Accesses (Largo de Sao Pedro)

Info

The landscape architecture intervention covers the open urban space known as Largo de São Pedro, up to the gates of Leiria Castle — within an area classified as a national monument.

The intervention arose from the need to make access to the Largo and the Castle easier and clearer. Alongside this objective, the project also sought to give the Largo an image closer to what is thought to have been its original, medieval appearance.

Given the archaeological and heritage sensitivity of the site, the works were monitored by multidisciplinary archaeology and anthropology teams.

The works under this contract focused on the construction of new buried infrastructure — water supply, stormwater drainage, wastewater, telecommunications and electrical networks — the dismantling and subsequent reapplication of cobblestone and stone-slab paving; floor coverings and copings in Ataíja vidraço limestone slabs, including solid stone benches; and containment and stabilisation works on the medieval wall, including rendering and painting.
